I could easily be wrong, but it seems to me that orchids seem to have a far more diverse strategy for attracting pollinators than most flowers. Here, I'm guessing the spots on the backs of the petals are supposed to look like an infestation of little (edible) bugs to other, more carnivorous bugs.
